The hypoglossal nerve (number XII cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for sticking out the tongue. With the right hypoglossal nerve (number XII cranial nerve) paralyzed, the tongue, when trying to stick it out straight, would protrude to the right. With the left hypoglossal nerve (number XII cranial nerve) paralyzed, the tongue, when trying to stick it out straight, would protrude to the left.
