The nerve that function for the salivary glands are not only the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve), but also the facial nerve (number VII cranial nerve).
The nerve for the sensation of the pharynx (the throat behind the mouth) is the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve). The nerve for the sensation of the larynx (the throat in the neck) is the vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve).
The nerve for the taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue is the facial nerve (number VII cranial nerve). That from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue is the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve). That from the epiglottis is the vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve).
The carotid artery is one of the arteries to the brain. Lowering of the oxygen level in it increases the firing of the oxygen receptor in the carotid body, which is carried to the brain by the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve). Also, elevation of the blood pressure increases the firing of the blood pressure receptor in the carotid body, which is also carried to the brain by the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve).
