The nerve that functions for facial sensation is the trigeminal (number V cranial nerve), while the nerve for facial muscle movement (facial expression) is the facial nerve (number VII cranial nerve).

The olfactory nerve functions as the nerve for smell. It is the nerve used when sniffing. The trigeminal (number V cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for sensation of the nasal cavity, such as itchiness, or pain such as when nose hair is pulled out. The nerve for small, or sniffing is the olfactory nerve (number I cranial nerve).

The trigeminal nerve (number V cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for sensation of the oral cavity, such as the food temperature (hot/cold), or pain from oral injury. The nerves for taste are the facial nerve (number VII cranial nerve), glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve), and the vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve).

The trigeminal nerve (number V cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for sensation of the conjunctive and cornea, such as pain with sand in the eye, or itchiness because of allergy. The optic nerve (number II cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for vision.

The trigeminal (number V cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for mastication. The nerve for facial expression is the facial nerve (number VII cranial nerve). The nerves for swallowing are the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve) and the vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve).
