The optic nerve functions as the nerve for vision. Pain such as with sand in the eye, or itchiness because of allergy, are 'sensation of the conjunctive and cornea'. They are not vision and thus not the functions of the optic nerve. Neither movement of the eye nor lacrimation (crying) is vision, and thus not the functions of the optic nerve.
