Saltatory conduction is the mode characteristic for the myelinated fibers. The conduction speed is high.

On a membrane of the nerve fiber, an action potential in one place conducts by depolarizes the 'neighboring' membrane (as above-mentioned).

In non-myelinated fibers, the myelin, which has high electric resistance, does not exist.

So, action potential can take place at any place.

So, the 'neighbor' depolarized by an action potential is close.

So, the conducting distance for a certain amount of time is short.

In myelinated fibers, the myelin, which has high electric resistance, does exist.

So, it is not that action potential can take place at any place, but rather, only at the gaps of the myelin (called node of Ranvier), where the electric resistance is low.
