Nerv06/introduction/membrane potential
In the resting membrane potential, inside the cell membrane is electrically negative, and outside positive. In the action potential, the polarity of the potential reverses. |
Even when the action potential is not being generated, there is a potential inside and outside the neuron membrane. This potential is called the 'resting membrane potential'. The largest difference between the resting and action potential is the electric polarity.
The potential of the resting membrane is about -80 mV, and that of action potential is about +20 mV. The membrane potential is generated by the difference in ion concentration inside and outside the membrane.
Challenge Quiz
Even at rest, resting membrane potential action potential overshoot is generated in the neuron membrane.
In resting membrane potential, it is electrically negative positive inside the membrane.
In action potential, it is electrically negative positive inside the membrane.
The resting membrane potential of a neuron is about + - 80 20 4 mV.
The action potential of a neuron is about + - 80 20 4 mV.
Membrane potential is generated by difference in osmotic pressure ion concentration water pressure inside and outside the cell membrane.
