The Hormones Involved in Calcium Homeostasis

Parathyroid hormone (PTH), Vitamin D and Calcitonin all have an effect on free calcium levels in the blood.

Calcitonin is important for the storage of calcium in bone and so will decrease free calcium levels in the blood.

PTH is important in controlling free calcium levels in the blood, a decrease in free calcium levels will increase the release of PTH.

PTH also is important in activating the Vitamin D that is in the blood, this activated Vitamin D helps PTH to maintain free calcium homeostasis
