Calcitonin suppresses the release of calcium from bone. It also enhances calcium excretion by the kidney and the deposition of calcium in the bone. |
The action of Calcitonin
The release of calcium from the bone (resorption) and its absorption from the small intestine transfers calcium into the blood. This will raise blood calcium concentration. The excretion of calcium by the kidney and its storage (deposition) in bone will transfer calcium out of the blood. This will decrease blood calcium concentration.
Calcitonin suppresses the release of calcium from bone. It promotes the storage of calcium in bone and its excretion by the kidney. The action of calcitonin is to decrease blood calcium levels.
