The frequency of the electroencephalogram (EEG) during sleep is low, and that during calculation is high. Thus the pattern of EEG, and in particular the frequency, is a subjective measure of the consciousness level.
Naturally, sleep frequency is not constant, rather it is periodically higher and lower according to the different sleep stages.
