When the fibers crossing at the optic chiasma are damaged, bitemporal hemianopsia, namely loss in the right (outer) side of the right eye and in the left (outer) side of the left eye, takes place.

The fibers crossing at the optic chiasma are fibers from the inner half of the right eye retina, for which the visual field is the right (outer) half of the right eye, as well as fibers from the inner half of the left eye retina, for which the visual field is the left (outer) half of the left eye.
