Nerve05/disorders of the spinal cord and optic pathway/Brown-Sequard syndrome
Summarizing the above-mentioned steps, the pathways that travel through the right or left half of the spinal cord are described below. With trauma or damage to the right or left half of the spinal cord, the following functions will be lost below the level of damage. This is called the Brown-Sequard syndrome.
RIGHT half of the spinal cord
- sensation of temperature and pain on the LEFT side
- deep sensation, touch/pressure sensation on the RIGHT side
- voluntary motion on the RIGHT side
LEFT half of the spinal cord
- sensation of temperature and pain on the RIGHT side
- deep sensation, touch/pressure sensation on the LEFT side
- voluntary motion on the LEFT side
Challenge Quiz
In Brown-Sequard syndrome, in which the RIGHT half of the spinal cord was damaged, sensation of temperature and pain on the left right side, deep sensation, touch/pressure sensation, on the left right side, and voluntary motion on the left right side is lost below the level of damage.
In Brown-Sequard syndrome, in which the LEFT half of the spinal cord was damaged, sensation of temperature and pain on the left right side, deep sensation, touch/pressure sensation, on the left right side, and voluntary motion on the left right side is lost below the level of damage.
In Brown-Sequard syndrome, in which half of the spinal cord was damaged, sensation of temperature and pain on the same other side, deep sensation, touch/pressure sensation, on the same other side, and voluntary motion on the same other side is lost below the level of damage.
