The cerebrum is colored light-blue in the illustration. The cerebrum has a unique role in the brain (a part of the central nervous system). Conscious activity such as "seeing" light, "listening" to sound, "deciding" to lift your arm, and "thinking" about what is written, are all functions of the cerebrum.

Namely, the electric signals (action potentials) from the eyes can be 'seen' only when they reach the cerebrum. Also, it is the cerebrum that 'decides' to lift the arm.

The cerebrum is divided into the cortex, limbic system and basal ganglia. Conscious activities are a function of the cerebral cortex.
