Large amount of chemical energy remain in the degradation products of energy metabolism without use of oxygen. This means that there are many conncections left. Next, the cell uses oxygen and further degrades the "degradation products without using oxygen" by removing connections and energy. In this step, many conncections are removed and many small substances, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O) are the degradation products.
