A nutrient including a large amount of chemical energy is now inside the cell. Cell removes the chemical energy (connecting atoms into one molecule) from the nutrient. This breaks down the nutrient, which becomes degraded. The cell becomes active by consuming the removed energy. This process is the energy metabolism. The removal of chemical energy is shown in red arrow, and the break down of nutrient in green arrow.
