A neck muscle called sternocleidomastoid muscle is used when turning the neck such as at pedestrian crossings of roads. The accessory nerve (number XI cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for this muscle.

With the right accessory nerve (number XI cranial nerve), the right sternocleidomastoid muscle contracts and the neck (and face) turns left. With the left accessory nerve (number XI cranial nerve), the left sternocleidomastoid muscle contracts and the neck (and face) turns right.
