The olfactory nerve (number I cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for smell, but not for sensation of the nasal cavity nor movement of the nose. |
The olfactory nerve functions as the nerve for smell. It is the nerve used when sniffing. The itchiness, or pain such as when nose hair is pulled out, are not smell, but are 'sensation of nasal cavity'. The trigeminal (number V cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for sensation of the nasal cavity.
