 Skeletal muscles contract only when stimulated. Usually, this stimulation comes from motor neurons in human bodies. With denervation because of injury etc, skeletal muscles can no longer contract. Naturally, somatic nerves innervate the skeletal muscles and can contract them voluntarily.
