The vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve) branches into a complex structure, and functions as the parasympathetic nerve for most of the thoracic and abdominal organs.

The vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve) functions as the nerve for the muscles of swallowing, as does the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve).

The nerve for the taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue is the facial nerve (number VII cranial nerve). That from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue is the glosso-pharyngeal nerve (number IX cranial nerve). That from the epiglottis is the vagus nerve (number X cranial nerve).
