There are two kinds of photoreceptor cells: rod cells and cone cells. The cone cells have higher resolution, and are used for distinguishing colors and shape. They are abundantly located around the 黄斑, which is in the center of the retina. Meanwhile, the rod cell, which has less resolution, are located around the periphery of the retina.
The 視力は網膜全体で一様ではない。錐（状）体細胞は網膜中心部の黄斑に一番密に存在する。そのため注目したいものがあると、眼球を動かしちょうど黄斑にその対象がとどくようにする。眼球も首も動かさずにこの文章を読もうとしてみて下さい。ナルホド、視力は一様ではないと思ったデショ。
赤、緑、青の三原色にもっとも感受性の高い錐（状）体細胞がそれぞれあると考えられている。この三種の錐（状）体細胞が刺激される割合により色が感覚される。
