The functions of the inner ear are: hearing (cochlea), sense of gravity (vestibule), sense of acceleration (semicircular canals).

Regardless of location or function of the hair cells, the movement of the hair is converted into action potentials. Thus, the study of ear function is to study how: 1) auditory vibration moves the hair in the cochlea, 2) how gravity moves the hair in the vestibule, and 3) how acceleration moves the hair in the semicircular canals, in relation with their structure.
