The functions of the inner ear are, cochlea:hearing, vestibule:sense of gravity, semicircular canals:sense of acceleration.
In the hair cells of either location and function, the movement of the hair is converted into action potentials. So, a good portion of studying the function of the ear, is to study how 1) auditory vibration moves the hair in the cochlea, 2) how gravity moves the hair in the vestibule, and 3) how acceleration moves the hair in the semicircular canals, in relation with their stucture.
