The pitch of a sound is determined by the frequency of the air vibrationWith different frequency, the 周波数が異なると、振動されるコルチ器の部位が異なるといわれている(進行波説)。高周波の振動 (高い音 )ほど前庭窓膜(や蝸牛の入り口、基部)に近いコルチ器を振動させ、低周波の振動(低い音)ほど先端に近いコルチ器を振動させる。異なる部位のコルチ器が振動されることにより、音の高さが感覚されるといわれている。
