The sodium channels open, sodium ions diffuse INTO the cell, the intracellular potential becomes positive, and because of this positive potential, some of the diffused ions are pushed back out of the cell. When the inward movement by diffusion and outward movement by the electric force are balanced, the intracellular potential is called the‘equilibrium potential’.
The equilibrium potential for sodium is positive.
